Welcome to "Speaking of Social Ish": Why Silence Is No Longer an Option

Depending on who you ask, I am two very different women.

To the State of New Jersey and the IRS, I am Danica S. Miller, Author and Founder/CEO of 

The Social Ish Starting Society, Inc.—a strategic leader focused on community building, curriculum development, and sustainable impact.

To the streets, the internet, and anyone who has ever tried to hush me up,

 I am  "The Social Sh*t Starter." Or, if you really know me, "The Vocal Vagina."

For a long time, the world told me those two women couldn’t exist in the same room. You’re either the polished executive or the provocative agitator. You’re either writing grant proposals or you’re speaking raw truth to power.

I call bullsh*t on that!

In fact, looking around at the state of our communities, I’d argue that you can’t effectively build a "Society" without starting a little sh*t first.

Defining the "Ish"

That brings us here: Speaking of Social Ish.

I chose this name because it lives right at the intersection of my two worlds. It is the shorthand for my nonprofit’s mission, but it’s also a warning label.

When we say we are "starting social ish," we aren't just talking about polite charity work. We are talking about the Ish—the messy, uncomfortable, systemic issues that most people are too polite to bring up at the dinner table. The barriers to funding. The silence around equity. The way narratives get hijacked by people who don't live our reality.

This blog is where the "Sh*t Starter" meets the CEO. It is where advocacy meets action.

What We’re Doing Here

This platform isn't a diary; it’s a blueprint. If you are here for fluff, you are in the wrong place. But if you are here to build, here is what you can expect:

• The Tech: We are going to talk about leveraging AI and digital tools to amplify our narratives. Technology is moving fast, and if we don’t control our own stories, someone else will write them for us.

• The Tactics: I’m pulling back the curtain on nonprofit management and community organizing. No gatekeeping. We’ll discuss what it actually takes to get funding, build a curriculum, and sustain a movement.

• The Truth: We will dissect the social issues impacting us right now. We won’t just point out the problems; we’ll explore the design flaws in the system and how to fix them.

Rooted in Newark

While the internet is global, the work starts at home. My heart and my headquarters are in Newark, New Jersey. The grit, the resilience, and the brilliance of this city fuel everything I do. When I speak on "Social Ish," I’m speaking with the energy of the West Ward behind me.
