Title: She Was Waiting in the Box — What My Baby Self Taught Me at
I've been thinking about what it means to receive yourself as a gift.
Not a version of yourself that's been polished and perfected. Not the you that's figured everything out. But the original you — the one that existed before the world got its hands on you.
That's what this birthday brought me.
Picture it: a gift box, tied with a ribbon. And when the lid comes off, there she is. Baby Danica. Tiny hands holding a birthday cake bigger than her ambition, eyes wide and waiting — not afraid, just ready. Reaching up. Saying in that wordless, ancient baby language:
Happy 50th Birthday. Come get me.
And something in me broke open in the best way.
Because that baby didn't know about the hard years. She didn't know about the nights when I questioned everything, the seasons of starting over, the times I wondered if the vision was too big or the road too long. She just knew. She arrived on this earth already carrying the fullness of who I was meant to be.
And she's been waiting for me to remember that.
Fifty is a reunion.
Not an arrival. Not a summit. A reunion — between who you were born to be and who you've been in the process of becoming. It's the moment you look back across the decades and realize: she didn't leave. Your younger self stayed right there, patient and certain, holding the cake, holding the light, holding the door open.
She waited through every version of you.
She waited through the doubt. She waited through the detours. She waited through the seasons when you forgot her completely and threw yourself into survival instead of purpose.
And here at 50, she's still there. Arms up. Cake in hand. Grinning.
Fifty is also a permission slip.
Permission to stop editing yourself for comfort.
To build without apology.
To love wider, lead bolder, and laugh louder than you ever let yourself before.
My baby self didn't come in that box to be cute. She came to remind me that everything I've been building — The Social ISH Ecosystem, the stories, the sacks of dignity handed to neighbors who are just trying to make it through — all of it was already in her. Already seeded. Already certain.
She just needed time. She needed me to grow into it.
So if you're reading this and you're somewhere in the middle of your own story — not yet at the milestone, not sure the vision will hold — I want you to imagine your own box.
Imagine your younger self inside it.
What would she say to you?
Mine said: Happy Birthday. We did it. Now don't you dare shrink.
And I'm not going to.
Here's to 50. Here's to her. Here's to the ones who waited on us to become who we always were. 🎀✨
